Above is an old school photo - King Edwards Grammar School 1939! Apologies for the poor image quality but if you click on one of the segments of the photo it will take you to a much larger version. Be warned though, each one will probably take a few seconds to download. We felt it was necessary to make the images this large in order for people to recognise staff and pupils in the photo. The age of the pupils in the photo must now range from about 79 to 85 years. My own family connections recognise several in the photo, if you think you do please contact us. Email Stourbridge

Memoirs of a King Edwards Schoolboy - W J Green 1933 to 1940. W John Green is in the far right of the photo above, third row back, second from the end. More writings of the Rev W J Green can be found on the genealogy page.

Trying to find an old friend or relative from the Stourbridge area? Simply e-mail us and we'll put it on here for you. Old school reunions, company reunions - send them in! This section is devoted to finding friends and relatives, please go to the genealogy section for appeals and links regarding tracing family history. Don't forget to let us know how you get on! For an example, please see the message just received from Peter Smith in Canada, who posted his original message on this page 3 years ago:

Hallelujah!! I posted a message on your "long lost" board some time ago. After the passage of what seemed to be a long period of time - I got a hit!! I was seeking some information with respect to some English lads who were evacuated to the Canadian prairies during the bleak days of World War II. Now, I am in the process of corresponding with the son of one of the lads and the nephew of the other two. Obviously, I want to thank you for the work that you must put into such an endeavor and special kudos for even caring about things like this. The world wide web is an amazing tool with an incredible ability to eliminate barriers between people around the world. It would be marvelous if nations could learn from Web specialists such as yourselves as they attempt to deal with political issues. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Peter Smith

After years of searching for some friends, I've only just found your site and I am hoping you or someone might be able to help? My name is Dawn, living in Leicestershire - I have 3 brothers. During our childhood we had family holidays in Barmouth, Wales .... this is where we met our friends. We were camping on "Williams" site. We met a family, which I'm sure were from Stourbridge ..... cannot remember the parents names, but the two brothers were IAN and NICK WOOD (WOODS) We had fantastic holidays there and I now take my 2 sons on holiday there. I am now in my 40th year and we are trying to arrange a reunion, maybe meet up in Barmouth. I know it's years ago but somewhere in my mind, I keep seeing this address on a scrap of paper they gave me - I'm sure it was Cherry Tree Court OR Cherry Tree Lane??? I am so hoping this might jog someone's memory?? PLEASE PLEASE if anyone knows the family or the boys (now men of course) I would love to hear from you and maybe we can organise that reunion. My e-mail address is Funkyfooty68@hotmail.com (Rec'd 1st Aug 08)

Hi my name is John Smith. I lived in Heath Lane Near the Plough & Harrow pub I attended the Grange School 1954 - 58 I would like to hear from anyone who was there at that time, Names I remember are Roger Perkes, Trevor Edwards, Geoff Reabould, Ian Wood, John Boswell, John Stokes, Brian, Eric & Bert Chance, Martin Harris, Ken Willets, Roger Shilvock, Fred Westwood, Ian Coss, David Clewes.............Many more would come to mind, in time, I am sure, I would also like news of old old Friend's I had outside school in particular John Nutting and Wilf Moore who both attended the Catholic school . Wilf Moore joined the Junior Leaders Regiment (Army) a musician. John Nutting worked for a time at Helix in Lye Graham Haywood and Malcolm Harper both went to Brook Street school, Graham lived in Hill Street, Malcolm in, or near Enville Street. They worked as apprentices for a firm of builders and decorators also in Enville Street. Myself and several of the above mentioned used to hang out around Mary Stevens Park during summer holidays and later at the "Ravello" coffee bar, we sometimes went to a youth club in Wollaston ( near the Cottage pub ?) There were three brothers Cliff, Ray and Mike Harris who lived behind the Savoy cinema. Cliff at one time ran a small weightlifting and body building club in Amblecote that John Nutting and I attended (John went on to become a junior champion body builder) Ray Harris was a lorry driver but was very interested in horses and may have married a girl from Kinver or Enville..Mike Harris was a projectionist at the Savoy cinema . One of my older brothers Basil Smith and some of his friends started a football team in the mid 50s, which i think was called Swinford Rovers, They played their home games in Stanley Road, opposite the park, on what was known locally then as "The Bogs" and they often travelled to away matches on the back of an old lorry, whatever the weather. Please, if you can help with my search re. any of the above names.. Or if you were around at the same time , please get in touch.
I promise to answer anyone who responds .... rjohnsmith@mail.com

I was “born and raised” in Stourbridge; Esther Shaw, - what a thrill to find this website! My parents, Lal and Noel SHAW, had a toyshop at 156 High Street, “Shaw's of Stourbridge”, right across from King Edwards Grammar School. Then they bought 157, and started a sideline business, the “Dolgar”, making dolls’ clothes . (sadly, this died in the war in 1939.) I went to Alexandra House School, in Enville Street, Head Mistress Mrs.. Brady. In my teens I was a student at Stourbridge School of Art and Design, right at the top of the High Street. My Aunt Babs Sheward at that time also had a toyshop in the Lye. I remember so many friends from my childhood - Daphne Hingley, Paul Eggington, Joan Bevan, Sylvia Lloyd, Ron Taylor, Marion Deeley, Mary Seabourne (nee Eccleshall), Ron Underhill, Tristram and Olwen, and many, so MANY more - what happened to us all? I’d love to hear from ANYONE who knew me when I was young (ahh! happy days!) I married Leslie Davies (Brettell Lane), we moved to Canada; divorced; remarried; I’ve lived in five different countries; I am now Esther Martin, Sarasota, Florida. I PROMISE to answer every response I get - if any!
Esther Shaw-(Davies) Martin, jandemm@verizon.net.
(rec'd 2 May 07)

Hello again, You posted a message for me, in May 07,seeking friends from my childhood; Esther Shaw (Davies) now Martin. I have not heard from friends, but made some new ones - got an e-mail from Mark Webb who knew the people NOW running the premises where I grew up. It's now Tanners Hair Salon. We exchanged e-mails and I sent photos and a "History of 156 High St." - and they have made a special window display! Not only that, but the Stourbridge News contacted me, and published a wonderful article too! Thank you so much your help. I am still hoping old friends will find your website and contact me. Sincerely, Esther Martin

Dear sirs, I would appreciate it if you can kindly help me to find a correspondence address of my old pen friend in Stourbridge. I was writing to Ms. Rebecca Ford between the years 1986-1989. However I lost the contact since that time. Since I come to the UK occasionally for business, I would like to call her and inform her about my self. Although I do not remember the precise address it might be Valley Road. She is probably 35 years old. Thank you in advance for your kind interest. My Uncle Harry (E.H.Q. Smith) was Vicar of Amblecote in the 1950s. I have fond memories of spending Christmases at the wonderful old vicarage (long since demolished). My parents were quite distinctive characters: my father Charles (Harry’s brother) and my mother Olga (a vivacious Spanish lady), are not easily forgotten by anyone who met them, I’m sure. I’d love to hear from anyone who remembers my family or anything to do with parish life at that time.

I am trying to find my mothers relatives in England, she came to New Zealand in1950 as a child migrant. She was born Phylis Emily Smith on the 22 August 1934 and was adopted by Alfred Smith and Violet Gladys Smith from Parkfield Road in Stourbridge they changed her name to Diane Smith. I know she had conections to Grange County Modern School Stourbridge and St John's Vicarage Stourbridge, under her adopted name. The only other thing i know is that her mother died having another baby around when mum was eight they were sent to a aunty and then she was adopted from there. I think she had a brother Gordon and a sister Wilma not 100% sure of the names i think there my have been another sibling not sure. The sister had lost a eye in a accident in the home relating to a gas fire. Mum found her past hard to talk about as it must of been hard loosing her mother and then being taking away from the rest of her family and to have no contact at all from then on. I have always wondered about them and now that mum passed away in January i would like to know about them. I hope someone will be able to help me in my search mum never went back to England i think the memories were to hard for her she was only 15 when she came here. Thank you Annette Owens (rec'd 13 May 05)

I attended Enville Street Junior School, Stourbridge, and left in 1953 to go to Longlands, Brook Street. I would very much like to get in touch with Sheila Poole who was a special friend at Enville Street. Sheila lived in Kinver and I remember visiting her house with her once when we were about ten years old, but I don't remember where it is. If you know Sheila's whereabouts please would you contact me, or ask her to contact me. I lived in Summer Street, off Enville Street, until I was twelve years old, when we moved to Queensway, Pedmore Fields Estate.
I have written a story about my Summer Street years, which I felt I wanted to do for my sons, so that they will know what life was like back then. I am thrilled to have found this Stourbridge site, and will be logging on every week. Joan Bracebridge - nee Baggott (Rec'd 8 Dec 04)

I would firstly like to congratulate you on a wonderful website. I was stunned to see the 1939 photo of King Edward's. My father is pictured on the fourth section from the left, bottom row second boy in from the right. He unfortunately died in 1970 aged only 42, I was 9. His name is Clive Dawes if anyone out there knew him or any of his family I would love to hear from you. I have recently been researching my family tree. My Father's Mother's name was Gertrude irene Kelley before she married Edward Dawes. She was known as Rene Kelley. Her father was Frank Kelley, he had a brother called Henry and as far as I know they kept the Spotted Cow pub in Enville Street. Indeed, there is a memorial to Henry Kelley near Clifton Street in Stourbridge. There is more information but probably too confusing to write here! if anyone knows any more or is interested to know any more from me then please contact me.

Greetings from the frozen plains of central Saskatchewan, Canada!! I am searching for some young men who were evacuated to Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Canada during WW II. There were three brothers who came there under the auspices of the Chrildren's Overseas Reception Board (CORB). The oldest lads were twins, Horace and William Fox who were born on July 10, 1931. Their brother was Derek Aston Fox who was born April 19, 1934. They were born in Darlington and their father's name was William Fox. I was in the same class as the twins in the 1941-42 school year. To my knowledge, they were only in Swift Current one year. Their younger brother Derek attended a different school and he apparently remained in Swift Current until sometime in the 1944-45 school year. I did not know him. My curiosity about what may have happened to these lads was stimulated during a visit to the U.K a while ago. I have been
pursuing the matter through the Public Records Office, The Imperial War Museum and finally through an organization known as Traceline. I have been able to determine only that Derek died in the name Derek Aston-Fox during the September quarter of 2000 in the registration district of
Stourbridge. I am hoping that there may be someone hwo can give me some information about William and Horace and also Derek. I should indicate that we were not close friends during their stay in Canada but I do recall them clearly and their experiences in Canada and their exploits
following repatriation are of interest. I would appreciate any information which readers of this may wish to share. I will definitely respond to any correspondence. Thank you!!!

I would be interested in anyone who has connections to Stintons, especially in the West Midlands. I know that there is a family in Quarry Bank and another in Old Hill and one or two Stintons in Cradley (Heath?), whom I know nothing about, but feel sure that they are connected somehow. I have a James Stinton married to two ladies, AT THE SAME TIME (Married Eliza Jones Sept 17, 1882 & Fanny Vernales Apr. 16, 1896. Eliza Jones was still alive in 1901 Census) - simply because these people insisted on naming their children after their favourite brother or themselves!!! (James, James Henry, John!!!) and they all live in the same area. (Lye- Beefeaters or Wollescote) Need to look into it. I'm looking for info on the Powell family that lived in Stourbridge. In a 1881 census my ggg grandfather Henry Powell lived in stourbridge with his wife Hannah (young) and their kids Mary, Emily, William, Eliza. Henry was a Butcher, I have a bill that shows that his store was on HIgh Street in 1874. In 1903 his son in-law Robert Tottey took over the Business. If you have or know anyone that has info on the powell family please email me.
Thanks, Shawn Powell (Canada)

Brierley Hill Grammar School - Two years ago, we organized a reunion of two fifth form classes from the year 1959. There were 66 people listed to find. We found 64 and are missing a Norma Brettle/Brettell and a Anthony Harrison. Norma married shortly after leaving school and live on or near Amblecote Road, Stourbridge. Her married name is unknown to us. She has since divorced, but we believe that she kept her married name. Anthony was only at the school about two years. He came from the Wakefield, Yorkshire area and was believed to have emigrated to Australia. Again, we do not know where. Having written over 500 letters to different people with the same names, nothing has turn up.(Except wonderful replies from Australians and New Zealanders) New Zealand was not left out, neither were sheep associations, cricket associations and many Harrison businesses. I even had one sheep shearer call me at 3.45 in the morning to ask why I had sent him a letter!!!! I still correspond with his teenage daughter!!! Unfortunately, we are no closer in finding either of these individuals. Norma was thought to have lived in the Stourbridge area, but Tony was believed to have lived in the Gornal area. I would love to hear from anyone, who might be able to help in this quest. We are having another reunion on May 17th 2003 at Himley House, and it would be wonderful if I could relay where these two missing persons can be located. Keep smiling, Joan Houken. I lived in Stourbridge through the 60's and 70's. Attended Gig Mill School and Longlands school (left in 1978). Worked at Ashfords of Stourbridge - not sure what they are called now - left the area in 1981 and apart from trips back to see my family I have not lived there since.
I have contacted Julie Davis, Janet Checketts and Alan Bond plus loads others all through Longlands website which was set up by Paul "Tango" Gardner. Where are the rest of you? I am about to turn 41 and amazed I have survived this long on the planet!
There was a reunion at the Stewponey a few years ago but I only saw my sister's ( Joann Cornock) old friends. Penny Medlicott contacted me a few years ago after we exchanged phone numbers in the Merry Hill Centre!!! Sadly I have not been able to find her since.
If anyone would like to organise a reunion, let me know. I live in Gloucestershire now. Contact me at siroxsirox@yahoo.co.uk.

I have been researching my maiden name(Allchurch) and have discovered that many of my father's relatives came from the area of Stourbridge. My father was Geoffrey T Allchurch and he had a brother Sidney(1914) and a sister Kathleen(1913). I believe that I probably have cousins that I never met. My sister and I were the 2 daughters from my father's first marriage and he remarried in 1945 and had 2 more daughters Jane and Susan. We did come to England in 1962 after being sent to Canada in 1954 to live with relatives. In 1962 we met my father and his new family but lost touch with them. We are planning a trip to England next year as we will have been in Canada for 50 years. We would love to trace our step sisters or any relatives in the area. Could you please tell me how to contact any living Allchurch's who are in the area or anyone who may think that they could be related to us. We thank you for any help you can give us....Anne Lesnick (nee Allchurch).

Hi, Im hoping you can help me. Im searching for an old school friend who's last know address was in Stourbridge. Her name is Claire Greenhalgh, and went to Rossmore Primary, South Wirral (approx 1978-81?). Lived in Queens Road Little Sutton at that time. Her parents Malcolm and Jill Greenhalgh have had several restaurants and residence in Golf Clubs in West Midlands since 1981. Last known was Sandwell Park Golf Club, Birmingham Road (left there 1996, have already contacted them to no avail.). Claire's last address to me was Corser Street, Oldwindsford. She has had a baby girl in March 2002, named Mia Olivia. My predicament is that Claire has written to me and sent me her good news, but has not given me her new address, and so I can not reply.... Myself and a friend have decided that as it has been fifteen years since we left High Park School Wollaston it is time we tried to get everyone back together. To this end we are looking at organising a re-union at an unknown place and a unknown time next year. Probably early July 2002. I would be grateful if you could mention this on your site as I need to get up an running on this now. I have since moved to Manchester and lost touch with everyone. There is a web site set up at www.oldbuzzard.co.uk to try to co-ordinate this. Cheers. Bari Pollard

Great to see the site - I was born and raised in Stourbridge, but now live in NE Scotland, following a period of world travel. I went to King Edward's School from 1968 - 74, and finally left the area in 1984. Do you hear from any other KE alumni from that time at all ? - I've otherwise completely lost touch..
